Manual Handling for Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists and Rehabilitation Assistants
Introduction
This one day course for Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists and Rehabilitation Assistants is aimed at providing a thorough overview of the legal and theoretical issues underpinning current best practice. Delegates will be given the skills and knowledge needed to prescribe and use equipment, and to balance clients’ needs and preferences against staff safety during Manual Handling.
Class Size
There is a maximum of 8 places on this course and a minimum of 3.
Aim
- To give delegates a good understanding of the requirements of the Manual Handling Operations Regulations and associated legislation within the workplace.
- To facilitate the knowledge and skills required to meet clients’ manual handling needs and promote staff safety
Programme
Theoretical overview including:
- Musculoskeletal injuries amongst therapists
- Legislation
- Relevant professional guidelines: Charter Society of Physiotherapy, College of Occupational Therapists
- Back Care in and out of work
- Risk assessment
- Falls and condemned techniques
- Safer handling principles
Comprehensive practical session includes:
- Chair manoeuvres
- Bed manoeuvres
- Small equipment demonstration
- Hoisting
- Use of other equipment
Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course delegates should:
- Have knowledge of the Manual Handling Operation Regulations and associated legislation within the workplace.
- Have an awareness of the structure of the back and important considerations concerning back care.
- Be confident in carrying out Manual Handling risk assessments and writing action plans.
- Be confident in prescribing and using appropriate equipment for clients.
All courses follow a problem solving approach which enables delegates to learn from a hands-on process of critique and peer review.
Note: To increase skills and knowledge in this specialised field we recommend that therapists in relevant specialities should attend the Therapeutic Handling Workshop which deals with using manual handling as a tool for Rehabilitation.
