Manual Handling Training for Occupational Therapists
Introduction
This one day course for Occupational Therapists (OTs) is aimed at giving OTs the knowledge and skills needed to prescribe and use manual handling equipment, and to solve complex problems by balancing clients’ needs and preferences against staff safety.
Class Size
There is a maximum of 8 and a minimum of 3 places on this course.
Aim
- To give delegates a good understanding of the requirements of Manual Handling legislation and relevant professional guidelines within the workplace.
- To facilitate knowledge and skills required to promote client independence and mobility without exposing staff to unacceptable levels of risk.
Programme
Theoretical overview including:
- Legislation
- Professional guidelines: College of Occupational Therapists
- Back care in and out of work
- Risk assessment & balanced decision making
- Falls and condemned techniques
- Safer handling principles
Practical session includes:
- Chair manoeuvres
- Bed manoeuvres
- Small equipment practice
- Hoisting
- Use of other equipment
Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course delegates should
- Have sufficient knowledge of Manual Handling and associated legislation to be able to make balanced risk assessment decisions within the workplace.
- Have an awareness of relevant College of Occupational Therapy guidelines
- Have an awareness of the structure of the back and important considerations concerning back care.
- Be confident to prescribe and use appropriate equipment for clients.
