Moving & Handling for Trainers
Specialist training for staff appointed as manual handling trainers within their organisation. We offer both a four day Train the Trainer course for those new to the role and a two day refresher course for existing trainers wishing to update their knowledge and skills.

Train the Trainer Course
Level: Advanced
Duration: 4 days
Target Audience: Staff appointed as manual handling trainers in healthcare settings
Assessment: Includes a competency assessment on Day 4
Note: This is the introductory level course for those recently appointed with little or no training experience.
Trainer Refresher Course
Level: Advanced — refresher
Duration: 2 days
Target Audience: Existing manual handling trainers wishing to update their knowledge and skills
Aims & Objectives
Train the Trainer Course
On completion, delegates will be:
- Able to identify the needs of their area including training requirements, equipment and specialist advice
- Confident to bring identified needs to the attention of their manager
- Able to co-ordinate and lead the preparation of risk assessments and safe systems of work
- Able to co-ordinate and lead the preparation and delivery of manual handling training to colleagues
- Equipped to monitor safe manual handling practices in their departments
- Aware of the need to attend regular training updates to keep up-to-date with developments in manual handling
Trainer Refresher Course
- Update knowledge of relevant legislative changes and professional guidance
- Refresh and sharpen existing competencies in risk assessment
- Update practical manual handling skills and teaching techniques
- Be confident in delivering up-to-date manual handling training to colleagues

Day 1
- Welcome and introductions
- Cost of manual handling injuries
- Legislation and policies
- Anatomy of the spine and back care
- Biomechanics and back care
- Risk management
Day 2
- Revision of Day 1
- How to move objects safely
- Practical manual handling techniques (loads)
- Teaching skills
- Manual handling equipment workshop
Day 3
- Revision of Day 2
- Condemned manual handling techniques
- Practical techniques — people: rolling in bed, lying to sitting, sliding in bed, hoisting, sit to stand
- Exam briefing
Day 4 — Examination & Assessment
- Practical techniques — people: walking, hand holds in walking, standing transfers
- Practical revision
- Unsafe handling techniques
- Competence in demonstrating practical skills
- Assessment of teaching skills
- Question time and course appraisal
Trainer Refresher Course
Day 1
