Moving & Handling of Children

Specialist training for staff who move and handle children in schools, care settings, and healthcare environments. We offer both a full day introductory course and a half day refresher course covering safe techniques and best practice for paediatric handling.

Introduction Course

Level: Intermediate

Duration: Full day

Class size: 3–8 delegates

Target Audience: Staff in hospitals, schools, nurseries, day centres, homes and the community who handle children

Refresher Course

Level: Intermediate — refresher

Duration: Half day

Class size: 3–8 delegates

Target Audience: Staff who have previously completed paediatric handling training and require a refresher

Aims & Objectives

Introduction Course

- To acquire the knowledge and practical skills needed to handle loads and children safely

- To be equipped to carry out basic moving and handling risk assessments

Refresher Course

- Be aware of any changes under manual handling law

- Be aware of any changes in the organisation's policies relevant to manual handling of children

- Have experience of using existing knowledge and skills in risk assessment and child handling to provide solutions to handling situations

Course Content

Introduction Course

- Manual handling, disability and human rights legislation

- Organisation policies

- Risk assessment of children handling

- Unsafe handling techniques

- Principles of safe handling of children

Practical Moving & Handling Techniques

- Moving children in bed

- Use of slide sheets

- Hoisting techniques

- Management of the fallen and falling child

- Assisting children in a chair

- Assisting children to stand / standing frames

- Assisting children to walk / wheeled stools

- Seated transfers — bed, chair, wheelchair

- Using small manual handling aids

- Managing children with multiple disabilities including learning difficulties

- Problem solving / questions and answers

- Course appraisal

Note: The practical aspect of the course will be tailored to the specific needs of each group.

Learning Outcomes

Introduction Course

By the end of the course, participants should:

- Have knowledge and practical skills needed to handle children safely

- Have participated in a range of practical paediatric handling techniques

- Be confident in managing a variety of handling situations in their workplace

Refresher Course

By the end of the course, participants should:

- Be able to apply existing knowledge and skills in risk assessment to provide solutions to handling situations

- Have refreshed and updated their practical paediatric handling techniques

- Be confident in managing children with multiple disabilities including learning difficulties
