A one day intensive introduction to the essential aspects of safety in the clinical laboratory.

Programme

Introduction: Aims and objectives of the course Legislation and Guidance:

  • What legislation/guidance applies to clinical laboratories?
  • What local rules should be in place?

Risk Assessment including COSHH:

  • What is a risk assessment?
  • What is a COSHH assessment?
  • Hazard identification
  • Safety data sheets and hazard symbols
  • How to carry out risk assessments
  • Selection of control measures

Biological Hazards:

  • Categorisation and containment of biological agents
  • Use of microbiological safety cabinets
  • Working at Containment Levels 1, 2 and 3
  • Handling and transportation of samples
  • Waste disposal
  • Selection and use of PPE
  • Dealing with accidents e.g. spills

Chemical Hazards:

  • Categorisation of chemicals
  • Use of fume cupboards
  • Handling and transportation of chemicals
  • Waste disposal
  • Selection and use of PPE
  • Dealing with accidents e.g. spills

Other Hazards:

  • Other hazards e.g. liquid nitrogen
  • Use of compressed gases
  • Manual handling

DELEGATE PARTICIPATION IS ACTIVELY ENCOURAGED TO ENSURE A REAL, LASTING CHANGE IN BEHAVIOUR AND REDUCTION IN RISK.

  • To comply with the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974, the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 and the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 1999.
